Carlotta Schiavio: The Journey of YaTii Talisman

Alien Nation
YaTii is a planet where harmony and friendship reign.
Carlotta Schiavio aka YaTii believes that art can massage the muscle of happiness and open the mind and psyche to new horizons radiating color and light.
Her flamboyant, luminous and playful paintings border on the abstract, depicting a happily alien universe. Abstraction is the rarefaction and materialization of a cosmogony felt as a spiritual quest and an assertive aspiration of joy for the luminous side of creation. The sunny and playful will in the choice of acrylics and bright enamels is evident, as well as the reference to esoteric powers in the use of glitter, lamé, ribbons, small icons, objects collected and preserved along the way. Since the beginning of Carlotta Schiavio's creative career, the sourcing of materials has been an experience full of energy to be transferred to art when, from a very young age, she went escorted to the large African markets to find the necessary for her jewelry creations. It is a memory that the artist recounts with the intensity of someone who has identified an initiatory moment in his life that has taken on a value that has transcended the contingent, remaining as an energy well to draw on over time through memory.
YaTii's works are all composed of two canvases joined by a central seam that is the fulcrum of creative energy that is released. The seam represents the search for balance in the coexistence of contrary elements. Harmony is activated by the playful and vital sign of predominantly circular, comprehensive and protective forms. A code that in the artist's imagination comes from afar to communicate openness, smiles, comfort, sincerity and friendship. An alien reality for planet Earth that Carlotta artistically abandons to reach the colorful and fantastic universe of YaTii with the gaze of the creative mind, thus recovering the sense of a truer belonging in tune with her spiritual nature. For YaTii, art produces an unlocking of the depths, awakening dormant expectations and aspirations. It is probably from her long experience of living in Africa that Carlotta borrows the idea of an art with a regenerating function. The Talisman, symbol of YaTii, is an apotropaic jewel with a psychic value that, instead of fishing in the mythological imagination, finds strength in this new cosmogony. From Earth, YaTii evokes the beneficial energies of its planet inhabited by round-eyed beings and bright colors in positive harmony with its habitat, which extends from seaweed to satellites, constellations and stellar cores. In YaTii's production, the Alien Nation series is the most recent, preceded in order by Star Nucleus, Satellite and Apotropaic Magic. A universe that does not contemplate the dark side, except as a component neutralized by a higher harmony. For YaTii there is the possibility of lightening the weight of the world through the thaumaturgical power of art. This applies to the works on display, but also concerns a prêt-à-porter production, such as the YaTii Talisman T-Shirts. Having started out as a jewellery designer, her artistic inspiration lends itself particularly well to fashion and design.

Rome, Yatii exhibits her canvases at the Radisson Blu es. Hotel as if painted by an alien
Good morning everyone, I come from Yatii", this is the greeting of Carlotta Schiavio at the presentation of her new exhibition of artistic creations, set up on the panoramic terrace of the Radisson Blu es. Hotel, with its breathtaking view of the Esquiline. The occasion is important because the painter celebrates one year since the day she decided to artistically leave planet earth, to look at the universe from another, colorful planet, Yatii. A series of paintings of all sizes, such as those whose inspiration comes from a world of fantasy, which for Carlotta is also a philosophy and a dream immanent in her imagination. In Yatii harmony and friendship reign, the colors have tints that do not exist on planet earth, they are bright, sincere, but capable of a thousand iridescent reflections. In Yatii, one of the dominant forms is the circle, a symbol of the sense of protection and comfort that breathes on the horizon of that new world. Yatii creates to bring smiles to others, each of its colors evoking joyful moods full of vitality.
From the first large canvases came the idea of Talismans of Yatii, a portable painting that can also be carried in a handbag, in a diary, in a book. Watching this riot of bold colors during the most difficult days seems to instill in the observer a good mood and ward off negativity like a good luck charm. Yatii was born in Bologna, but since she was a child she has traveled a lot, from India to South America, attended university in New York and lived many years of her life in Ethiopia during her school days. Perhaps it was in the lands of Africa that she borrowed the idea of an art with an apotropaic and regenerating function; Art as an energetic awakening to dissolve inner blocks, opening those mental cages that sometimes seem to paralyze our minds.
The name Yatii came to her mind while she was painting, she doesn't even know how, but she often sees images or words while traveling to Yatii. Acrylics lend themselves very well to his creativity because they can be used in different ways, they can be diluted and in this way lengthen their processing times by delaying drying. She also loves enamles because they make colors bright and luminous . The artist opted for abstract paintings almost immediately. Her creative career began in Africa, curating the jewelry section of an important gallery in Ethiopia, the St. George gallery. She had to do with the many varieties of silver that can only be found in African markets, metals of many shades, which she personally chose to create fine jewelry of Western design. The peculiarity of those jewels was the combination of silver with other materials considered poor and with leather. The encounter with painting, on the other hand, took place as a game, as often happens in the face of great discoveries. Carlotta was now in Rome, she had commissioned the construction of a mezzanine for her apartment and only when the work was finished did she realize that she had forgotten to have a roof put in. At that point, using a simple curtain seemed trivial to her and she started painting a sheet with abstract and circular designs. It wasn't until she looked back at her work that she realized she had potential and started having fun with acrylics. "I wonder if the stars are lit up so that everyone can find their own," said the Little Prince, and perhaps the painter, who wrote fantastic stories as a child, has found her dimension in Yatii, that is, a sense of fullness and brotherhood that sometimes seems to escape her on earth. "Yatii means that there are other friendly worlds and that we are not alone on earth. Colours are life, joy," says the artist, "positivity, light, and they are able to convey powerful thoughts."

Artistic Games, Poetic and Subtle
Artistic games, poetic and subtle, free flowing tales of the unconscious, fragments of stories and places seen, lived and filtrated through the magic of art.
Objects, people, places seen by Carlotta Schiavio like footprints of thoughts and emotions. Symbolic silhouettes with lively contours, space and movement combined with a unique and personalized dexterity. Messages from the heart, pondered and reinvented in her paintings with a new psychology of images sawn together. Paintings that translate into an act of love to reality, an act of love to nature and to life, filtrated and concentrated in a special still in which forms and colours are shown in a dream like atmosphere. Creative language which often acquires a particularly autobiographical character on canvas as well as important visual meaning stemming from that which has intrigued and intensively inspired her rich artist's sensitivity in her frequent and numerous journeys.
The world's geography is depicted in movement marked by present and fixed in the ….. There's a global dimension to Carlotta Schiavio's approach, the nature of her work is both symbol and idol, sawn together with the strength of her roots, of her inner most self and her artistic verve, a universe so clear from which strings of fantasy and colour appear to unite parts of her inner universe, the weaving together of different worlds and ways of being in search of harmony and balance. The immensity of Africa, the striking exotic atmosphere from the orient where solitude and meditation become the figure of her artistic spirituality, the frantic , agitated daily life, lived in the shadow of New York skyscrapers, these are the magical situations of her journeys, stratified in time and creating a rich and expressive experience, capable of important versatile creativity.
And it is within this exceptional experience of images assimilated through a new way of communicating , that the forms and the spatial dimension of Carlotta Schiavio acquire strength and value in the purity of her structured compositions where reality and invention come together in a very personal view of ever changing expressions. Very original transparent forms immersed in small lagoons, move around on her canvases like in the depth of the blue ocean floor, petals of flowers that bloom like red lips, reels of colours like invented and unusual scales…evoking more intimated desires of universal justice. Fragments of forms, of expanses filled with signs and matter, rising, wandering like golden comets with severed tails, or brown-coloured commas, metallic that cut and etch canvasses according to a musical rhythm, repetitive and composed.
An authentic and silent rhythm which germinates spontaneously, continuously bringing out voices from within. Her inner most appeal dictated by a rich and animated sense of self, secrets of a precious intimacy directly interpreted on painting by instinctive scripture in perfect unison with colours, with atmosphere, with forms and signs. Original metaphors built in a sort of creative ceremony through thought and passion of a renewed and continually advancing discovery.

Art is All About Rhythm
Art is all about rhythm, movement and distinct forms in the ever changing and complex world of her paintings. Monochromatic greens and blues transcend in symbolic starry skies, square and cell shapes, wire netting like fantastic cobwebs , prehistoric amoebas , robotic honeycomb or futuristic jellyfish. Scattered sand and pumice stone conveys matter to her work whereas a discerning (discriminate) order of circles, dots and signs leads to a rarefied vision of the impalpable and the unimaginable that must be captured and intimately translated by the observer. Further enchantment comes from the mysterious wire netting which permeates over the monochromatic colours . This constellation , in alternative to its symbolism , gives the key to its sentimental interpretation. Through the geometric – kinetic forms found in Schiavio's work , one can detect a new interpretation of abstraction ; an occasion to rediscover beat and movement. The rediscovery of abstraction in the nineties by artists from around the world is , according to Carlotta Schiavio due to the richness (or wealth) of expression and forms this genre offers with its foundation on colour and the use of unusual material that enhance the fun and pleasure of painting. The\search for movement on the monochromatic base seems fundamental in her work. The rhythmic movement that suggests the fascinating world of imaginative freedom, of geometry , of memory. It becomes evident that Carlotta Schiavio's paintings are influenced by her different cultures (Italy, Austria, Syria and Daghestan) as well as by the ones she has absorbed during her many journeys. The sowing together of canvases with threads of cotton , lamè and silk is nothing but the desire to unite and to shape gaps in relation to signs and images of her extended search both narrative and critical of the mended fracture/wound between the artist and the world that surrounds her. Carlotta Schiavio's work has an immediate impact, natural and instinctive even if there's deep awareness and knowledge in her paintings which stems from a refined education and an elevated ability for expression . These paintings evoke reflection, (meditation), an inward journey, not only in terms of painting but also of life, of existence, of reality and of the visual evolution of matter. When it comes to Carlotta Schiavio's paintings , mystery is often found in the artistic act of her creation ; mystery of waiting, mystery of sensitivity, mystery between symbols and alphabet , between form and sign, geometry and cosmic resonance. I like to define Carlotta Schiavio as an artist of restlessness as she sets no limits, obligations or rules which , were she to respect them, there wouldn't be room enough for her personality. She is , essentially, an artist that shuns rules, especially defined ones. She's one of those artists whose fulfilment cannot come from partial creation.

New York Traffic between Painting and Photography
The trend of avant-garde art and research has an English name “Traffic Jelly” from “Traffic Jam” which indicates an artistic traffic jam between painting and photography in an abstract interaction of two artistic mediums.
The Roman protagonists of this trend are Guido Laudani (photography) and Carlotta Schiavio
(acrylic on canvas) who having followed parallel paths that have never intersected until now exhibit the result at “Odradek La libreria” (via dei banchi vecchi 17) in the heart of historic center.
Carlotta transfers on canvas the contradictions sublimated into creativity of this artistic training. Born and lived in Ethiopia and then catapulted into the hyper technological reality of the States she expresses herself with luminous abstract materials. Guido Laudani interacts superbly with his latest digital photographic abstract works reflecting his never-ending research on color, movement, light and shadow.

Stars Up Close
There are those who observe the stars from the unyielding eye of a telescope, those who admire them on summer nights trying to follow their last path before breaking in the dark and those who invoke them as the guide of their destiny. Carlotta, on the other hand, imagines them in front of her, taking shape on her canvases.
She tries to grasp them for a moment, abandoning any sort of convention that can define them and transports them to a new dimension, the flat and well-defined one of the support.
So she doesn't turn her gaze to the sky, she arranges the canvas on the floor and that luminous fragment, her favorite subject, she looks for in the depths of her perception. Let instinctive imagination take over, sand dust and pumice stone reveal the elusive sense of matter, bright colors the decoration to pay homage to the light that radiates from those bodies and reflects on everything that surrounds them.
"A painting of interior, intimate research", she herself describes the concept, to give us a key to interpretation.
It is therefore full of an experience that comes out into the open through artistic expression, which has been nourished by affective and cultural contaminations and which now, "loosened" from the seams of Lamè of the beginning, takes its first steps towards the future. "STARS UP CLOSE" thus puts a first point in Carlotta's artistic career, marks a new path with small symbols spread in the paintings and exhorts us to look for that universe that outside and inside our body, every day does not cease to amaze.

In Exhibition with Stars Up Close at The Zen
In Exhibition with Stars Up Close at The ZenFor lovers of beauty, paintings made of a thousand shades ripe with colors the opportunity is tempting. Until the 9th of October in Salerno at The Zen in via Roma 262 the artist Carlotta Schiavio will exhibit her works in a solo exhibition titled “Stars up Close.” At the opening people were intrigued by the canvases sewn together by threads of lame’ and cotton all with bright and often fluorescent colors enhanced by polyform glitter. Of course, who expected to see conventional objects was surprised to discover that this exhibition “takes you to the stars”!
Schiavio states “Mine is a painting of interior research, the stars of this exhibition were not painted gazing towards the sky mine is an instinctive fantasy. The stitching of the canvases are the opposing forces of my psyche that struggle to find a spiritual balance and the desire to continue my journey. The technique I use is acrylic which allows me to use color pure, diluted or mixed with other materials. “Carlotta Schiavio” was born in Bologna but spent her first thirty years in Africa and the United States. After a period in London, she now lives in Rome. Her artistic career began as a jewellery designer and she then transitioned to painting.
This year she exhibited in a solo exhibition at Ashanti Gallery.
